XXL

ANDY WARHOL "GIANT" SIZE is a massive, spectacular, visual biography of the life and career of Andy Warhol. Measuring 420 x 320mm (16 1/2 x 12 5/8 in.), with 624 pages, this huge book is a chronology of Warhols life, from the cradle to the grave, using photos and artifacts from the depths of the Warhol Archive and the Warhol Foundation as well as material from private sources. With rare or unseen pictures of the New York glitterati over three decades along with receipts, letters, documents, family snaps, press cuttings there is no better insight to the man beneath the wig.

"GIANT" is the ultimate over-the-top scrap book on one of the biggest characters in 20th century art. Beginning with the registration of Andrew Warholas birth on 8-6-28 in Pittsburgh, the book is packed with the treasured possessions and ephemera of an obsessive hoarder. Phaidon was granted unprecedented access to public and private archives and collections, including the Andy Warhol Foundation and the Andy Warhol Museum as well as the holdings of Warhol collaborators, personal friends, and photographers of the period.

Steven Klein

Artist Statement

"Portraiture in the past has been regarded as a documentation of a person but for me it is a documentation of the encounter between myself and the subject. It is not meant to reveal them, nor is it meant to subject them to an X-ray; it is a departure from that. I am more interested in the alchemical reaction that occurs when elements are brought together in a space.

Not so much a collaboration between photographer and subject, more a scientific experiment - the studio becomes a lab. For me the portrait is not psychological either. It is atomic. Atoms change their electrical charge continuously, and the more challenging the shoot, the greater the chance of this charge. Yes, I do begin with an idea, a series of ideas that link together logically. But logic is often superseded by events beyond my control.

Art starts as a means of control but the atoms that compose us can spin in a different direction. When you see Madonna in a series of these images, she is neither a perfected icon nor is she revealed – instead she remains ambiguous. I feel the obsession with celebrities is for the most part based on a tired need to know oneself through the other, and perhaps the concept of knowing oneself is all deluded.

There is a desire to link photography with painting. My background is painting and I feel there is no connection between the two. It is as if the camera is linked to a sin, producing a bastard art form that we feel we must link to the past in order to give it credentials. I don't want those credentials. I have no need to apologize for photography. My archives exist only for sound business reasons; otherwise my work would be disposable. And there lies the contradiction, for I am a private person not an exhibitionist, I am a person who lives for the future, not the past; I am standing behind a camera in order that I can extend myself in front of it".

New New York

For lovers of New York and interiors, Taschen has released a must have book on these two topics (which go oh so well together). New New York Interiors is a stunning showcase for some of the best interior New York has to offer. Here's what Taschen has to say about it:

"It has been over ten years since TASCHEN's original New York Interiors was published and while much has changed in the Big Apple since then, the city is still bristling with an exciting and eclectic mix of cutting-edge movers and shakers - a fact that is quite perfectly reflected in its interiors. New York has long been a magnet for artistic people, and since Septermber 11, the city has become less money-driven and more creative, with an unprecedented of influx graphic designers, interior designers, artists, gallerists, and collectors. Across the river from Manhattan, trendy, less-expensive Brooklyn neighborhoods such as Williamsburg offer a convenient taste of life just outside the fast lane".
